Born in Napier, Phil graduated in sculpture from the University of Auckland’s Elam School of Fine arts. He also holds a master of Arts, honours degree from Nepean, West Sydney University.
In 1968/69 Phil’s experience as a member of the foundation group From Scratch Orchestra (London) galvanised his intermedia approach to art and music making. Back in New Zealand in 1970 he founded the From Scratch Orchestra (NZ) and in 1974 the music/performance group From Scratch, which performed to wide acclaim in New Zealand and overseas.
At the end of 2001 Phil retired from his position as senior lecturer and head of Intermedia, at which time he received an Arts Foundation Laureate Award. He now devotes his energies, full time, to exhibiting in film, sound and sculpture, performing prolifically in New Zealand and internationally.
